How to Add Certifications in DEEDS: Stacking Subject Areas in Delaware

One License, Multiple Certificates

Delaware's dual-credential system lets you hold only one active license at a time — but you can stack as many Standard Certificates as you qualify for on that single license. Each certificate authorizes you to teach a specific subject area or grade band, and adding new ones expands your instructional flexibility without affecting your license tier.

The practical value: a teacher certified in Mathematics who adds a Physics certificate can fill positions in either department. For districts struggling to staff STEM classrooms, a multi-certified teacher is significantly more valuable — and more likely to land the assignments they want.

No Additional Fees

Adding a Standard Certificate through DEEDS is free. The $100 application fee you paid for your initial license and first certificate is a one-time charge. Every additional certificate after that costs nothing at the state level.

The state-level addition is free; you may still have costs for the required Praxis II or ACTFL assessment ($120–$170 for a Praxis II test) and any transcript or coursework verification.

The Process

1. Log into DEEDS 3.0 through your existing EdAccess or ClassLink credentials
2. Select "Apply for Additional Certification" from your dashboard
3. Choose the Standard Certificate that matches your target subject area
4. Route your Praxis II scores — during registration, designate Delaware (code R7065) as a score recipient for the new test
5. Submit supporting transcripts if the certificate requires coursework beyond what's already in your DEEDS file — transcripts must come directly from the registrar, same as your initial application

The DDOE reviews the application and, if your documentation is complete, adds the certificate to your active license. Processing follows the same timeline as initial applications — 2 to 4 weeks normally, up to 6 weeks during the June–September peak.

Subject-Specific Requirements

Most Standard Certificates require a passing Praxis II score plus documented coursework in the content area. The specific test codes and credit thresholds vary by certificate. A few categories have additional requirements:

Special education requires you to already hold a Standard Certificate in a content area before you can add the Special Education certificate. You can't hold a special education credential alone.

Bilingual and world language certifications require the ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) proficiency assessment instead of (or in addition to) a Praxis exam. Scores route through Language Testing International (LTI).

Elementary education is subject to the ongoing assessment transition: subtest 5002 is accepted through December 31, 2026, but starting January 1, 2027, only Teaching Reading: Elementary (5205) will be accepted.
