American Board Certification Alabama (ABCTE) — Requirements and Cost
The American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence (ABCTE) received Alabama ALSDE approval in March 2025, making it one of three Alternative Teacher Preparation Organizations authorized to prepare career changers for the classroom. It's the cheapest approved option at $1,450-$1,900, but it only covers secondary teaching fields — and several details about how it interacts with Alabama's certificate system are easy to miss.
What ABCTE Costs in Alabama
American Board uses a flat-fee model rather than monthly payments:
- Promotional pricing: $1,450 (during events like Teacher Appreciation Week and periodic sales)
- Standard one-time fee: $1,900
- Installment plan: $2,682 total, split into nine monthly payments of $298
This makes ABCTE significantly cheaper than iteach ($4,949) and dramatically cheaper than university Alternative Class A programs ($15,000-$30,000). The tradeoff is that ABCTE does not result in a master's degree — you earn a Class B (bachelor's level) Professional Educator Certificate, not Class A.
How the Program Works
ABCTE is entirely self-paced and online. There is no student teaching requirement in the traditional sense. Instead, once you complete the program's content modules and pass their internal assessments, you complete a paid teaching residency in an Alabama school district with on-the-job mentorship.
You'll teach under a Conditional Certificate in a Teaching Field (CCTF), which your employing superintendent must request from the ALSDE. The CCTF is renewable for up to three one-year terms within a four-year window.
To convert your CCTF to a standard Professional Educator Certificate, you'll need to:
- Complete all ABCTE program requirements
- Pass the Praxis Subject Assessment in your teaching field ($120-$170)
- Pass either the edTPA portfolio ($300) or the Praxis PLT exam ($156) — candidates with three or more years of experience can choose either
- Complete the Alabama Teacher Mentor Program (ATMP) during your first year, with 2.5 hours of weekly mentor contact
Entry Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution
- Minimum 2.50 overall GPA (candidates with a 2.00-2.49 GPA can qualify with a 5% increased Praxis score)
- Cleared FBI and Alabama State Bureau of Investigation background check through Fieldprint ($46.20)
- Full-time employment offer from an Alabama school district
That last point catches people off guard. ABCTE does not place you in a school — you must find your own teaching position, and the district superintendent must formally sponsor your CCTF application.

Field Restrictions
ABCTE is approved for secondary teaching fields only. You cannot use it for:
- Early Childhood Education (P-3)
- Elementary Education (K-6)
- Special Education (any grade band)
If your goal is teaching in one of those areas, your alternative route options are limited to university-based programs that issue an Interim Employment Certificate (IEC) or, for special education grades 6-12, the Temporary Special Education Certificate (TSEC) route.

The cost difference between ABCTE and iteach is about $3,000 — meaningful for career changers who are leaving a previous salary to start at a Class B teacher pay level. But if you're planning a long career in Alabama education, the university Alt-A route's Class A certificate puts you on a higher salary lane from day one.
Is ABCTE the Right Choice?
ABCTE works best for career changers who want to teach a secondary subject (math, science, English, social studies, or CTE fields), want the lowest upfront cost, and are comfortable with a self-paced online format. The $1,450 promotional price makes it the most affordable path into an Alabama classroom.
It's a poor fit if you're targeting elementary, early childhood, or special education, or if the Class A salary premium matters to you over a full career. Alabama's salary schedule rewards the master's degree at every experience step.
