Washington HVAC License Renewal and Continuing Education Requirements

Missing a renewal deadline in Washington doesn't just mean a lapsed credential — it means doubled fees, a mandatory reinstatement process, and in some cases a complete exam retake. The state runs three separate renewal cycles for HVAC professionals, each with different timelines, costs, and continuing education requirements. Getting any one of them wrong can shut down your ability to pull permits or bid on work.

06A and 06B Specialty Electrical Renewal

Your L&I specialty electrical certificate — whether it's the unrestricted 06A or the restricted 06B — renews every three years. The renewal window opens 90 days before the expiration date printed on your card. You can renew online through the L&I SecureAccess portal or by mail.

Current fees under the July 2026 schedule:

• Online renewal (before expiration): $92.60
• Mail renewal (before expiration): $106.40
• Online late renewal (after expiration): $185.30
• Mail late renewal (after expiration): $212.90

Late renewal doubles the cost across the board.

Continuing Education for Specialty Electricians

To renew your 06A or 06B card, you must complete 24 hours of approved continuing education during the three-year renewal cycle. L&I specifies a mandatory breakdown:

• 8 hours of NEC Code Updates (covering the current adopted edition)
• 4 hours of Washington RCW/WAC electrical laws and rules review
• 12 hours of industry-related electives

All courses must carry a Washington-approved course prefix (e.g., WA2026-223). Out-of-state CE that doesn't carry the WA prefix won't count. Providers like Mike Holt Enterprises and ExpertCE offer Washington-specific packages that satisfy the full 24-hour requirement.

Electrical Trainee Card Renewal

If you're still accumulating your supervised hours toward the 06A (4,000 hours) or 06B (2,000 hours) certification, your trainee card renews annually. You must also complete 24 hours of approved basic electrical classroom training each year to renew the card — not the same continuing education that licensed electricians take, but foundational instruction covering NEC fundamentals and electrical theory. That annual block is 48 hours every two years, which is also the 06A exam classroom minimum.

Current trainee renewal fees:

• Online renewal (before expiration): $67.90
• Late renewal: $95.40

Failing to renew your trainee card before it expires means you can't legally work on HVAC electrical systems, even under supervision. Your employer also faces liability — L&I inspectors verify trainee card status during jobsite visits.

Contractor Registration Renewal

Your L&I contractor registration is a separate credential from your individual electrical license, and it renews on a biennial (two-year) cycle. The renewal fee is $150.20 regardless of whether you file online or by mail. A 6.51% fee increase took effect on July 1, 2026, under the CR-103 rulemaking order.

To renew, you need to confirm that your surety bond and general liability insurance are both current and on file with L&I. If either has lapsed, L&I automatically suspends your registration — no grace period, no warning letter. Your insurance provider must submit certificate updates electronically through the L&I system. Paper certificates are not accepted.

The reinstatement fee after a registration suspension is $70.90, but that's the easy part. You'll also need to re-file proof of an active surety bond and insurance certificate before L&I will reactivate your registration.

Seattle and Spokane Municipal Renewal Deadlines

State credentials are only half the picture if you work in Seattle or Spokane. Both cities run their own renewal cycles for local trade licenses.

Seattle SDCI: All refrigeration journeyman mechanic and contractor licenses expire on June 30 every year. If your Seattle journeyman license expires, your refrigeration contractor license automatically becomes void too — a joint expiration rule that can halt active projects mid-install. If you don't renew within one year of the June 30 expiration, your license is fully cancelled and you'll need to retake the SDCI trade exam.

Spokane: Gas heating mechanic and boiler operator licenses expire on December 31 annually. The fee is $57.00 per year. If you miss the December 31 deadline but renew before March 31, you can still reinstate the license. After March 31, the license is void and you must sit for the examination again.

With three state credentials (trainee/specialty card, administrator certificate, and contractor registration) plus potential municipal licenses in Seattle or Spokane, tracking deadlines across different renewal cycles is where most HVAC professionals get tripped up. A missed renewal on any single credential can stop the work: an expired specialty or trainee card means you cannot legally perform HVAC electrical work even if contractor registration is current, a lapsed Seattle journeyman mechanic card immediately voids the attached refrigeration contractor license, and your ability to pull permits depends on the relevant credentials being current simultaneously.
