Utah Electrician License Renewal

The Biennial Deadline: November 30 of Even-Numbered Years

Utah electrical licenses renew on a fixed two-year cycle. Every Journeyman, Residential Journeyman, Master, and Residential Master license expires on November 30 of even-numbered years — regardless of when you were originally licensed. The next renewal deadline is November 30, 2026.

DOPL has transitioned to electronic-only renewal notifications. If your email address or contact information in MyLicenseOne is outdated, you may not receive a reminder. Missing the notification doesn't extend the deadline.

Continuing Education Before You Renew

Before you can submit a renewal, you must complete 16 hours of approved continuing education (CE) during the current two-year cycle. The breakdown under R156-55b-304:

12 Core hours, which must include:

• At least 8 hours on National Electrical Code changes
• At least 4 hours of NFPA 70E electrical safety training

4 Professional hours covering safety, business practices, or trade skills

All CE must come from a course provider approved by the Electricians and Plumbers Licensing Board. Providers report hours directly to the state CE registry. You can verify your reported hours at the Utah public CE registry — check before the deadline to make sure your provider actually submitted them.

Apprentices are exempt from CE requirements. They don't renew in the same cycle — apprentice registration is maintained separately.

The Renewal Process

1. Log in to the MyLicenseOne portal at commerce.utah.gov
2. Retrieve your Renewal ID (generated automatically for your license)
3. Verify your CE hours are reported in the state system
4. Pay the $84 renewal fee online

Online renewals can be submitted through MyLicenseOne once your CE hours are verified. Confirm current paper-renewal instructions with DOPL before relying on them.

What Happens if You Miss the Deadline

Within 30 days of expiration: You can still renew, but a $20 late fee applies on top of the $84 renewal fee.

Between 30 days and 2 years: Your personal license lapses. Follow DOPL's personal-license reinstatement process, pay a $50 reinstatement fee plus the renewal fee, and demonstrate that all CE requirements were completed. DOPL may also require updated background screening.

Beyond 2 years: The license is no longer eligible for simple reinstatement. You may need to reapply from scratch — which could mean retaking exams.

Working on an expired license carries the same penalties as unlicensed work: misdemeanor classification and administrative fines starting at $1,000.

Contractor License Renewal Is Separate

If you hold an E200 or E201 Electrical Contractor license in addition to your personal trade license, that's a separate renewal with a separate deadline and fee ($128 online). The contractor license also requires current general liability insurance ($1,000,000 per occurrence/$2,000,000 aggregate) and workers' compensation coverage — your insurance certificates must be active at the time of renewal.

Don't assume renewing your personal license covers the contractor credential. They're independent credentials with independent expiration cycles.
