Rhode Island Electrician License Application

The Rhode Island electrician license application is not an online form you fill out and submit — it is a paper packet that the DLT Professional Regulation Unit reviews by hand. Getting any part of it wrong means your application gets returned and you lose your spot in the next exam cycle.

What Goes in the Packet

For the Certificate B (journeyman) exam application:

• Completed exam application form — filled out in ink, not digitally. The DLT warns that PDF forms completed on iPhones frequently suffer from overlapping text corruption, and these are rejected on sight
• Copy of valid government-issued photo ID — driver's license or passport matching the exact name on your application
• Certificate of Completion of Apprenticeship — issued by the DLT Apprenticeship Office after your sponsor verifies your 8,000 OJL hours and 576 RTI hours
• Signed company ratio sheet — verifying your employer maintained legal apprentice-to-journeyworker ratios during your training
• $75 non-refundable application fee

For the Certificate A (contractor/master) exam application, the packet also includes:

• Proof of active Certificate B held for at least two consecutive years
• Documentation of 12,000 total trade hours
• Notarized employer verification letters on company letterhead detailing dates of employment, hours worked, and scope of work performed

Out-of-State Applicants

If you hold an active license from another state and want to bypass the apprenticeship requirement, your packet must include:

• Official, state-certified license verification from your home state's licensing board — computer printouts and photocopies are rejected
• Copy of your active out-of-state license
• Notarized employer verification letter on company letterhead confirming at least 8,000 hours of electrical trade experience

The verification must come directly from the licensing board. For Massachusetts licensees, this means generating the request through the ePlace portal. Use the licensing board's official verification process for other states. Each state has its own process, and the DLT does not accept standardized third-party verification services.

Submission Deadline

Completed applications must be physically received by the DLT Professional Regulation Unit in Cranston at least 15 working days before the monthly exam date. Late submissions are automatically deferred to the next month's testing cycle.

Common Rejection Reasons

Applications get returned — without refund of the processing fee — for:

• Illegible or incomplete forms — every field must be filled in clearly in ink
• Un-notarized employer letters — employer affidavits for incomplete registered-hour records and out-of-state verification must be notarized
• Employer letters on personal letterhead — letters must be on company letterhead, not personal stationery
• Computer-generated license verifications — out-of-state verifications must be official and state-certified
• Missing ratio sheets — the company ratio sheet is a separate document from the employer verification letter
• Unregistered apprentice hours — hours worked before DLT apprentice registration cannot be counted

After Submission

When the DLT receives your application, its status in the online registry will show "Pending Exam." This means your application is in the review queue — it does not mean you are approved to sit for the exam. Wait for your physical exam approval letter to arrive by mail before attempting to schedule an exam date.
