Mississippi HVAC License Renewal

Renewing a Mississippi HVAC license isn't just paying a fee and moving on. The Mississippi State Board of Contractors (MSBOC) ties renewal to active insurance verification, and residential license holders face a continuing education requirement that commercial holders don't. Add in the 2026 shift to email-only renewal notices, and missing a deadline is easier than it should be.

Renewal Fees by Classification

The MSBOC charges different renewal fees depending on your license type:

• Commercial licenses (including HVAC Specialty and Major Mechanical): $200 per year
• Residential licenses (including Residential HVAC and Residential Mechanical): $50 per year

These fees are non-negotiable. Late renewals incur penalties, and an expired license means you cannot legally pull permits, bid on projects, or perform work under that credential until it's reinstated.

Continuing Education: Residential Only

Here's where the two tracks diverge significantly at renewal time.

Residential license holders whose credentials were issued on or after July 1, 2015 must complete 2 hours of board-approved continuing education each year before renewing. The CE courses must come from MSBOC-approved providers. Failure to demonstrate completion at renewal time results in late penalties or license expiration.

Commercial license holders (HVAC Specialty and Major Mechanical) are currently exempt from mandatory CE hours. There's no annual training requirement for commercial renewals — you pay the fee, maintain your insurance, and the board processes the renewal.

This asymmetry surprises contractors who hold both residential and commercial classifications. If you carry a Residential HVAC license alongside a Commercial HVAC Specialty, you need CE for the residential portion even though the commercial side doesn't require it.

Insurance Verification at Renewal

The MSBOC doesn't just check whether you paid. They verify that your insurance remains active because the board is listed as the certificate holder on your commercial general liability policy.

For commercial licensees, the minimum CGL requirement is $300,000 per occurrence and $600,000 aggregate. If your insurer reports a lapse — because you missed a premium payment, switched carriers without updating the board, or let a policy expire during renewal — your license suspends immediately. Not after a grace period. Immediately.

Businesses with five or more workers must also maintain active workers' compensation coverage on file with the board.

Email-Only Notices Starting 2026

The MSBOC transitioned to email-only renewal notices beginning in 2026. If your email address on file is outdated, you won't receive the notice. And "I didn't get the email" doesn't extend your renewal window.

Check your contact information with the board before renewal season. If you've changed email addresses, switched business domains, or if your inbox filters board emails as spam, update your records proactively.

The Qualifying Party Complication

Your license isn't just tied to your business — it's tied to the qualifying party (QP) who passed the state exams. If your QP leaves the company, you must notify the MSBOC in writing immediately and qualify a replacement within 90 days or the license is cancelled.

At renewal time, the board verifies that the QP is still actively employed by the firm. This means current proof of employment — a recent pay stub, W-2, or documentation showing the QP as an owner or officer with the Secretary of State. If the QP departed since the last renewal and you haven't filed the replacement paperwork, the renewal will be denied.

Local Renewals Run in Parallel

Don't forget that municipal registrations and, where required, local contractor license bonds also require annual renewal, separate from the state license. If you're registered in Jackson (no local license or permit bond), Tupelo ($10,000 bond, expires September 30 of the fiscal year), or other municipalities, those local obligations have their own renewal schedules and deadlines.

Letting a local bond lapse while your state license remains active doesn't help — you still can't pull permits in that city until the bond is reinstated.

Staying Current

The simplest way to avoid renewal complications: set calendar reminders 90 days before your state renewal date, verify your email on file with the MSBOC, confirm your insurance carrier will send the renewal certificate directly to the board, and check that your QP is still on the company's payroll records.
