The DLI License Lookup Tool

The Department of Labor and Industry maintains a public license verification tool at dli.mn.gov. No login required — anyone can search.

The lookup covers all plumbing credential types: registered unlicensed plumbers (PA prefix), journeymen, masters, and contractors. You can search by name, license number, or business name.

What the Lookup Shows

A standard search result includes:

• License status — active, expired, suspended, or revoked
• License type — registered unlicensed, journeyman, master, or contractor
• Expiration date — when the current license term ends
• CE credit status — whether continuing education hours are recorded as complete
• Bond status — for contractors, whether the surety bond is current
• Enforcement actions — any disciplinary history, complaints, or administrative penalties

Why Apprentices Should Check Their Own Record

The lookup isn't just for homeowners vetting a plumber. Registered unlicensed plumbers (apprentices) should review their own DLI/iMS records periodically to confirm that:

• Their accumulated experience hours match their personal tracking
• The category breakdown (water distribution, DWV, fixture, discretionary) is recording correctly
• Their supervising master plumber's Form CC0100 submissions are reflected in the system

Discrepancies between your personal records and what the iMS portal shows can delay your journeyman exam application. The DLI doesn't send proactive notifications about hour mismatches — you have to check.

For Homeowners and Property Managers

Before hiring a plumber for a permitted project, a quick lookup confirms two things:

1. The individual plumber holds an active license at the appropriate level (journeyman or master)
2. If a company is doing the work, its plumbing contractor license is current. Confirm its bond and insurance separately.

An active individual license without a matching contractor license means the plumber works for someone else — they can't independently contract, bid, or pull permits.

When the Lookup Shows a Problem

If your own record shows discrepancies, contact the DLI Construction Codes and Licensing Division at 651-284-5034 or [email protected]. Common issues include:

• Hours not reflected — usually a CC0100 that was submitted but not processed, or submitted with errors
• Expired status you didn't expect — missed renewal deadline or lapsed CE hours
• Missing work-experience records — a previous master who did not sign, or a CC0100 that was not submitted or processed

For apprentices tracking hours across multiple employers, checking the portal after each annual renewal upload is the safest practice for catching errors before they compound.
