What the iMS Portal Does

The Internet Management System (iMS) at ims.dli.mn.gov is where everything in Minnesota's electrician licensing system happens. Initial registration, exam applications, license renewals, experience form submissions, CE tracking, exam scheduling — all of it runs through this one portal.

Most licensing transactions described in the DLI workflow are handled through this system. If you're working toward or maintaining an electrical credential in Minnesota, you'll use it regularly.

Getting Started: First-Time Access

If you've never interacted with the DLI before, you'll enter the system as a guest:

1. Navigate to ims.dli.mn.gov
2. Select "Continue as Guest"
3. Complete the Unlicensed Individual Application for your initial RE registration
4. Pay the $14 fee
5. After processing (approximately one week), you'll receive your RE registration number and can create a full iMS account

Once you have an account, every future interaction — renewals, experience submissions, exam applications — uses your iMS login. Keep your credentials and associated email address current. Renewal notices, exam approvals, and DLI communications go to whatever email is on file.

What You Can Do in the Portal

The iMS portal handles these specific functions for electricians:

Registration and renewals: Submit initial RE registration, process annual renewals, and pay fees. The system shows your current registration status, expiration date, and renewal history.

Experience form uploads: Submit the signed Registered Electrician Work Experience Form (re_exp.pdf) at each annual renewal. Once processed, these hours are locked into your state record permanently.

Exam applications: Submit your Journeyman or Master exam application, upload supporting experience documentation, and pay the $50 exam fee. The DLI reviews your application through the system and sends approval or rejection notices to your iMS email.

Exam scheduling: After your exam application is approved, you log back into iMS to select your exam date and location. Available slots appear for the DLI St. Paul headquarters (Tuesday through Thursday weekly) and Greater Minnesota sites (monthly).

CE tracking: View your continuing education compliance status, including completed hours and upcoming requirements. Some approved CE providers report completions directly to the iMS system; others require you to upload documentation.

License verification: Check the status of your own credentials or look up other electricians and contractors by name or license number. The public lookup function doesn't require an account.

Common Navigation Issues

The iMS portal works, but it's a government system designed for function over usability. A few things that trip people up:

Finding your renewal window: The portal doesn't always surface your renewal date prominently. Check under your profile or license details for the expiration date. Set your own calendar reminders rather than relying on the system's notification timing.

Document upload formats: The iMS system accepts specific file formats for experience forms and supporting documents. PDF is standard. Uploading a photo of a signed form instead of a scanned PDF can cause processing delays.

Exam scheduling availability: Popular exam dates at the St. Paul headquarters fill quickly. If your preferred date isn't available, check the Greater Minnesota sites — Bemidji, Detroit Lakes, Duluth, Mankato, Moorhead, Rochester, St. Cloud, Virginia, Willmar, and Winona all host monthly exam sessions.

Account email updates: If you've changed email addresses since creating your account, update it in iMS before your next renewal cycle. Missed renewal notices and exam approvals are a common cause of lapsed credentials.
