Why You Should Verify a Michigan Daycare License

Parents dropping a child at a home daycare deserve to know that the provider holds a current, valid license. Michigan makes this verification straightforward, but the lookup process has changed since the state moved child care licensing from LARA to the Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential (MiLEAP) under Executive Order 2023-6.

A valid license means the provider passed a background check through the Child Care Background Check (CCBC) system, completed mandatory training through MiRegistry, met the state's physical-space standards, and cleared an on-site inspection by a MiLEAP licensing consultant.

How to Search a Michigan Daycare License

The primary public lookup tool is MiLEAP's Great Start to Quality (GSQ) provider search. Here is how to use it:

1. Visit the Great Start to Quality website and navigate to the "Find Child Care" search tool.
2. Enter the provider's name, city, or ZIP code.
3. Filter results by provider type — Family Child Care Home (1–6 children), Group Child Care Home (7–12 children), or Child Care Center.
4. The listing shows the provider's license status, star rating (if participating in GSQ), licensed capacity, age range served, and the license expiration date.

Providers who hold an "Original License" are within their first six months of operation and have not yet transitioned to a regular two-year license. That is normal — not a red flag — but it does mean the program is new.

What the License Record Tells You

Each record displays several fields worth checking:

• License status: Verify that the provider has a current license. An "Original License" is valid during the provider's first six months, after which the provider transitions to a regular two-year license.
• Licensed capacity: The maximum number of children the provider can care for at any time. Family homes max out at 6 unrelated children; group homes at 12.
• Compliance history: Licensed providers must maintain a Licensing Notebook containing inspection reports, special investigation reports, and corrective action plans, and make it available to parents during business hours.
• Quality star rating: Providers enrolled in Great Start to Quality receive a rating. Not all providers participate — the program is voluntary — so the absence of a rating is not a negative signal.

What the Lookup Cannot Tell You

The public database does not include the provider's background check details, training transcripts, or the full text of inspection reports. If you want the inspection report itself, you can request it from the MiLEAP Child Care Licensing Bureau directly or ask the provider — licensed providers are required to maintain a physical "Licensing Notebook" on-site containing all inspection and investigation reports, and they must make it available to parents during business hours.
