The Childproofing Items That Fail Michigan Daycare Inspections

MiLEAP licensing consultants walk through every room of your home during the on-site inspection, and childproofing violations are among the easiest citations to receive. The fixes are cheap and fast — outlet covers cost pennies, cord cleats cost a few dollars — but providers who skip them face corrective action notices that delay their license by weeks.

Three categories come up repeatedly: hazardous materials storage, electrical outlet protection, and window cord management.

Hazardous Materials Storage

Every household chemical, cleaning product, medication, and potentially toxic substance in your home must be stored in a locked cabinet or container that is completely inaccessible to children. This applies to every room, including bathrooms, the garage, and any basement or utility area children might access.

The specific requirements:

• Original labeled containers — never transfer bleach into an unmarked spray bottle or combine chemicals into a single container
• Locked storage — use locked cabinets or containers that are inaccessible to children
• Original, labeled storage — keep cleaning chemicals in their original labeled containers and locked out of children's reach
• Outdoor chemicals — fertilizers, pesticides, gasoline, and pool chemicals stored in a garage or shed must also be locked, and children must not have access to those spaces during operating hours

Consultants check under kitchen sinks, bathroom vanities, laundry rooms, and garage shelves. They open cabinets. If they can reach a bottle of drain cleaner without unlocking something, you receive a citation.

Electrical Outlet Protection

All unused electrical outlets accessible to children must be covered with safety plugs or replaced with tamper-resistant receptacles. This includes outlets behind furniture that a child could reach by moving or crawling behind the piece.

Tamper-resistant receptacles (required in new construction since 2008) have internal shutters that only open when both prongs of a plug are inserted simultaneously. If your home has older outlets, you can either replace them with TR receptacles or use standard outlet covers — both satisfy the licensing requirement.

Walk through every room at child height. Outlets behind couches, under desks, and along baseboards all need coverage. Consultants check these methodically.

Window Cord Safety

Loose window treatment cords — from blinds, shades, or curtains — are a strangulation hazard that MiLEAP takes seriously. All cords must be secured to a wall-mounted cleat or cut short enough that a child cannot loop them around their neck.

The simplest solution is replacing corded blinds with cordless alternatives in all child-use areas. If you keep corded blinds in rooms children do not access (an upstairs office, for example), ensure those rooms are physically separated from the care space and inaccessible during operating hours.

If replacing window treatments is not feasible, secure cord cleats (the small wall-mounted hooks that wrap excess cord) to the wall. Wind the cord tightly around the cleat so no loop is accessible to children.

Additional Physical Safety Checks

Beyond these three categories, consultants verify several related items during the walkthrough:

• Firearms and ammunition — must be stored in a locked, separate location, unloaded, with ammunition stored separately
• Sharp objects — knives, scissors, and tools must be out of children's reach
• Standing water — wading pools must be emptied after each use; hot tubs and pools require physical barriers
• Plants — toxic houseplants must be removed or placed completely out of reach
