Massachusetts HVAC License Verification

Multiple Portals, Not One

Massachusetts doesn't have a single license verification system for HVAC credentials. Because the state splits HVAC licensing across multiple boards, verifying a contractor's credentials means checking the portal that matches their specific trade license. Use the wrong portal and you'll get no results, which doesn't mean the person is unlicensed — it means you're looking in the wrong database.

Here's which portal to use for each credential type.

MyLicenseOne — OPSI Credentials

Portal: madpl.mylicenseone.com

This is where you verify credentials issued by the Office of Public Safety and Inspections:

• Refrigeration Apprentice, Technician, and Contractor licenses
• Pipefitter licenses (Apprentice, Journeyman, Master)
• Construction Supervisor Licenses (CSL)
• Sprinkler Fitter licenses

Search by the license holder's name or license number. OPSI stopped printing physical paper licenses — all credentials are now digital, accessible through this portal. A licensed individual can display their digital license on a mobile device or print a copy from the portal. Both are legally equivalent to the old hard-copy format and must be exhibited upon request by a building inspector.

When verifying a refrigeration contractor, check the individual's Refrigeration Contractor license and confirm the business credentials and permit authority required for the project.

eLIPSE — Occupational Board Credentials

Portal: elicensing21.mass.gov/CitizenAccess

This portal handles credentials from the Division of Occupational Licensure's trade boards:

• Sheet Metal Worker licenses (Apprentice, Journeyperson J-1/J-2, Master M-1/M-2)
• Sheet Metal Business licenses
• Plumber and Gas Fitter licenses (Apprentice, Journeyman, Master)
• Plumbing and Gas Fitting Corporation licenses

The eLIPSE portal covers a broad range of professions beyond construction trades — real estate, cosmetology, engineering — so filter your search to the relevant board.

ePLACE — Electrician Credentials

Portal: elicensing.mass.gov/CitizenAccess

This portal handles Electrician licenses, including Apprentice, Journeyman, Master, and Systems Technician credentials.

DFS Portal — Oil Burner Credentials

Portal: madfs.mylicense.com/verification

Oil Burner Technician and Apprentice certificates are issued by the Department of Fire Services, not by OPSI or the DOL trade boards. If you're verifying credentials for a contractor who services oil-fired heating equipment, this is the only portal that will return results.

HIC Registration Verification

Portal: contractorhub.mass.gov

Home Improvement Contractor registration is verified through the MA Contractor Hub. Any contractor contracting directly with a homeowner for residential HVAC work over $1,000 on an existing, owner-occupied one-to-four-unit property should be registered here. The portal shows the contractor's registration status, registration number, and expiration date.

What to Look For

When verifying an HVAC contractor's credentials, check three things:

1. Active status — a license that shows as expired, suspended, or revoked means the holder cannot legally perform that trade work. Biennial renewals mean licenses can lapse if the holder forgets to renew, so always verify current status, not just that a license was once issued.

2. License level — a Journeyman Sheet Metal Worker can perform ductwork installations but generally cannot pull permits independently. Only master-level license holders or licensed contractors can pull trade permits in most municipalities. If you're hiring a contractor, verify that they hold the master or contractor-level credential appropriate to the work.

3. Business entity — for trades that require a business license (sheet metal, plumbing/gas fitting), verify both the individual tradesperson's license and the business entity's license. A master with an active personal license whose business license has lapsed cannot pull permits or contract for work under that business name.

For Homeowners

If you're hiring an HVAC contractor for a residential project, verifying credentials before signing a contract protects you against unlicensed work. Check the HIC registration on the Contractor Hub, then verify the specific trade licenses on MyLicenseOne, eLIPSE, or ePLACE depending on the type of work. A legitimate contractor will have no issue providing their license numbers for verification.
