Where to Look Up an HVAC License in Massachusetts

Because Massachusetts splits HVAC licensing across multiple boards, there is no single search tool that covers all HVAC-related credentials. The portal you use depends on the type of license you are verifying.

Refrigeration and Construction Supervisor licenses: Use the OPSI MyLicenseOne portal at madpl.mylicenseone.com. This covers Refrigeration Apprentices, Technicians, and Contractors, as well as Construction Supervisor License holders.

Sheet Metal and Gas Fitter licenses: Use the eLIPSE portal at elicensing21.mass.gov. This covers all tiers of Sheet Metal Worker licenses (Apprentice, Journeyperson J-1/J-2, Master M-1/M-2, and Business), as well as Plumber and Gas Fitter credentials.

Electrician licenses: Also through eLIPSE, though some Electrician credentials route through the ePLACE system at the same URL.

Oil Burner Technician certificates: Use the DFS verification portal at madfs.mylicense.com/verification.

Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) registration: Check through the MA Contractor Hub at contractorhub.mass.gov.

What You Are Looking For

When verifying a contractor's license, confirm three things: the license type matches the scope of work they are proposing, the license status is active (not expired, suspended, or revoked), and the license number matches the individual or company name they are operating under.

For business licenses — Sheet Metal Business, Plumbing/Gas Corporation — verify that the designated "Responsible Craftsman" or qualifying licensee is still associated with the entity. If that person has left the company, the business license may no longer be valid even if it shows as active in the portal.

Digital Licenses Are Now Standard

OPSI stopped printing and mailing physical paper licenses. Licensees retrieve, display, and maintain their credentials digitally through the MyLicenseOne portal. A digital license displayed on a mobile device or a self-printed paper copy is legally equivalent to the old hard-copy license. Contractors must present their license upon request by a municipal inspector.

If a contractor shows you an old physical card, verify it through the portal — the card itself does not confirm current status.
