The Biennial Renewal Cycle

Maine plumber licenses renew every two years. Your renewal date is tied to your initial license issuance date, not a universal calendar deadline. OPOR's online portal handles renewals — there's no paper renewal option.

Renewal fees: $100 for Trainee Plumber, $200 for Journeyman and Master Plumber. The background check fee that applies to initial applications is not charged on renewal.

Continuing Education: What's Actually Required

Maine currently has no active continuing education requirement for plumbing license renewal. Some commercial sources state otherwise, but the Board's current rules are the controlling reference.

Don't confuse plumbing with electrical. Maine electricians must complete 15 hours of continuing education per renewal cycle. The plumbing board operates under a separate set of rules.

What Happens If You Miss the Deadline

Within 90 days of expiration — You can still renew by paying the standard renewal fee plus a $50 late fee. Your license status shows as expired during this window, and you're not authorized to perform plumbing work until it's reactivated.

90 days to 2 years past expiration — Reinstatement requires the renewal fee plus a $100 penalty fee. Same restriction: no authorized work until the license is active again.

More than 2 years past expiration — You must re-apply as a new candidate and re-take the trade exam. Your previous license history doesn't exempt you from the examination requirement.

Reporting Obligations

There's a parallel obligation that catches licensees off guard: under Title 10, Section 8003-G, you must report certain changes to the Plumbers' Examining Board within 10 days. That includes changes to your name, physical address, email address, any new criminal convictions, and any professional disciplinary actions from another state's licensing board.

Failing to report within the 10-day window is a direct violation of board rules and can result in fines, license suspension, or rejection of your next renewal application.

Keep Your License Active

The penalty structure makes the math clear: a $200 on-time renewal costs far less than a $300 reinstatement, and both are cheaper than re-taking the trade exam after a two-year lapse. Set a calendar reminder 60 days before your expiration date and handle it through the OPOR portal.
