The Elementary Exam Is Changing

Louisiana is an early adopter of the Praxis Elementary Education Fundamentals series (test codes 8002-8006), which replaces the legacy multi-subject exam (Test 5001) that elementary education candidates have been taking for years. The new series launched in March 2026, and candidates pursuing elementary certification need to know which test codes to register for and when the old ones stop being accepted.

Early Adoption Pricing

From March 9 through May 31, 2026, ETS offered a 75% discount on the Fundamentals series for candidates in early-adopting states like Louisiana — dropping the registration fee from $79 down to $19.75 per test. That window has closed, but the standard $79 fee is still significantly lower than the combined cost of the older exam series.

Praxis Steps: Modular Testing

Starting in Summer 2026, ETS activated "Praxis Steps" modular testing for the Fundamentals series. Instead of sitting for the entire multi-subject test in one session, you can take and retake individual content "Steps" — each covering a specific subject area.

This changes the testing calculation for candidates who struggle with one subject area. With Steps, you only retake the module you didn't pass, reducing the cost and anxiety of clearing a single subject.

The Reading Subtest Decision

Elementary education candidates face a choice on how to satisfy the Science of Reading mandate (Act 448). Two options:

Standalone Teaching of Reading: Elementary (5205): Passing score of 159. Dedicated exam focused on evidence-based reading pedagogy. Costs within the usual $120-$180 Praxis exam range.

Reading Language Arts Subtest (7002): Part of the newer 7001 Elementary Multiple Subjects series. Bundles ELA content knowledge with the reading pedagogy requirement in one test. Costs roughly $85 — compared to approximately $220 when taking the 5002 (ELA content) and 5205 (reading pedagogy) separately.

The 7002 uses a stepping passing score:

• Through December 31, 2026: 138
• January 1, 2027 through December 31, 2028: 147
• January 1, 2029 onward: 153

Testing sooner means a lower bar. If you're close to ready, the current 138 threshold is substantially more forgiving than the permanent 153 score that takes effect in 2029.

The 28-Day Retake Rule

If you don't pass a Praxis exam, ETS enforces a strict 28-day waiting period before you can sit for the same code again. Registering even one day early triggers:

• Automatic cancellation of the new appointment
• Forfeiture of the registration fee
• A potential test security violation flag

One useful exception: if you miss your scheduled testing date entirely without a formal cancellation, the 28-day rule resets. You can re-register after just three business days, though you pay the full fee again. This matters for candidates under TAT renewal deadlines who need to document two testing attempts within a calendar year.

Free After 3

ETS's "Free After 3" program applies to test attempts initiated on or after October 1, 2025. After paying for three separate attempts at the same Praxis exam code, you're eligible for unlimited free retakes for five years from the score report date of your third attempt.

The process isn't automatic:

1. Wait for an email notification from ETS (typically within three days of your third score release)
2. Complete the online request form
3. Receive a test-specific voucher to apply at checkout
4. Each voucher is valid for six months — request a new one for every subsequent attempt

This program is particularly valuable for the reading assessment, where the stepping score means you might pass on a later attempt simply because the threshold hasn't risen yet, without any change in your actual performance.

Testing Accommodations

Candidates who need accommodations for documented disabilities, ADHD, or health conditions must submit requests to ETS Disability Services before scheduling. Standard review takes four to six weeks — plan ahead.

Four primary accommodations can be self-registered directly in your ETS account without a formal voucher:

• Extended testing time (up to 50% extra)
• Extra rest breaks
• Screen magnification
• Selectable color contrasts

For anything beyond those four, you'll need either a formal approval from ETS Disability Services or a Certification of Eligibility (COE) form signed by your university's accessibility office, which expedites the review to two to three weeks.

Score Reporting

Always designate Louisiana as an automatic score recipient during ETS checkout using state code 7330. Praxis scores are valid for state licensing for 10 years from the testing date. If you forgot to add Louisiana as a recipient, you can request additional score reports from your ETS account (fee applies).
