Louisiana Contractor License Cost

The State Fees Are the Cheap Part

The LSLBC's application fees are capped by statute and relatively modest:

  • Licensing fee: $100
  • Examination fee: $50
  • Home improvement fee: $50 (if applying for HIC registration)

Total state application cost: $150–$200 depending on your license type. But these fees represent a small fraction of what getting licensed actually costs. The real expenses sit in the layers around the application.

CPA Financial Statement

The LSLBC requires a CPA-prepared financial statement showing minimum net worth of $50,000 (commercial/residential) or $25,000 (Home Improvement/Mold Remediation). The statement must be notarized; for major classifications, it must be a compilation or formal review by an independent CPA.

CPA fees for a basic compilation vary by firm and complexity — expect to pay several hundred dollars for a straightforward balance sheet. If your entity is new and the CPA needs to structure assets and liabilities from scratch, it can cost more. This is one of the most common budget surprises for first-time applicants who didn't plan for accounting costs.

Trade Exam Fees

PSI Services charges $120 to $175 for the trade exam, paid directly to PSI when you schedule. If you test at a center outside Baton Rouge, add a $75 convenience fee.

The Business and Law course is completed through the LSLBC portal. The $50 examination fee is paid during the application, while the trade exam fee is paid directly to PSI when you schedule.

If you no-show on a scheduled trade exam, rescheduling costs $195 ($120 exam fee plus $75 re-registration fee) and requires a 30-day wait.

Insurance

This is typically the largest ongoing cost. Since Act 757 took effect on August 1, 2026, residential construction, residential subclassification, mold remediation, and home improvement contractors must carry:

  • $500,000 minimum commercial general liability — premiums vary significantly based on your classification, claims history, and annual revenue. For a new residential contractor, expect annual GL premiums in the thousands.
  • Workers' compensation — required under La. R.S. Title 23 for all employees. Rates depend on your trade classification and payroll.

Commercial licensees are exempt from filing insurance with the LSLBC but must carry both coverages for local permits and project requirements.

The Bond Question

A common source of confusion: the LSLBC does not require a state-level contractor license bond. Several national surety sites market "Louisiana contractor license bonds," but the state statute (R.S. 37:2156.1) doesn't mandate one. If your net worth falls short, the statute provides for an Irrevocable Letter of Credit from a bank — not a surety bond.

Local parishes are a different story. East Baton Rouge requires a $10,000 general contractor bond and $5,000 bonds for electrical, mechanical, and plumbing trades. Other parishes have their own local bonding requirements. These are parish-level obligations, not state-level.

Business Entity Formation

Registering your LLC or corporation through GeauxBIZ costs $125 for the Articles of Organization filing (increased under Act 921). A registered agent service adds an annual fee if you use one. The federal EIN from the IRS is free.

Parish-Level Costs

Every parish where you plan to work has its own occupational license taxes, registration fees, and permit costs:

  • New Orleans: Parish occupational license fee, plus $190 Certificate of Occupancy for home-based businesses. Building permit fees start at $60 base plus $5 per $1,000 of construction value.
  • East Baton Rouge: Occupational license tax ($50 start-up January–June, $25 July–December), local contractor bond, and permit fees.
  • West Baton Rouge: Registration fee plus double-fee penalty if construction starts before a permit is issued.

These parish costs are project-specific and ongoing — they're not a one-time expense like the state license application.

Total First-Year Budget

Adding it up for a residential contractor: state application fees ($150–$200), CPA financial statement (several hundred dollars), trade exam ($120–$175), LLC formation ($125+), general liability insurance (thousands annually), workers' compensation (varies by payroll), plus parish registrations and bonds for each jurisdiction where you plan to work.

The state license fee is $100. The total cost to be fully legal at both the state and parish level is an order of magnitude higher.
