State Application and Exam Fees

Kentucky moved to biennial (two-year) licensing under HB 444, so these fees cover a two-year cycle:

Initial licenses are prorated for a period of 13 to 24 months to align your first renewal date with your birth month.

Renewal Costs

Renewal fees match the initial application fees: $100 for Journeyman, $200 for Master, $400 for Contractor, all on a biennial cycle. Renewals are due by the last day of your birth month in the second year of the cycle. For business entities without a birth month, the deadline falls on the last day of the month in which the license was originally issued.

Late renewals add a $50 penalty. If your license lapses for more than 60 days but less than three years, reinstatement costs the standard renewal fee plus an additional reinstatement fee of the same amount — effectively doubling what you owe.

Continuing Education Costs

All active licensees must complete 6 hours of DHBC-approved continuing education per year (12 hours per biennial cycle). Approved providers like 1st Choice Continuing Education charge around $69 per 6-hour course. If you hold both a Master and Contractor license, you need 12 hours per year (6 technical + 6 business), which doubles the CE cost.

The CE itself is not a fee to the state — you pay the approved provider directly. But it is a cost of maintaining your license, and skipping it means your renewal gets denied.

Insurance (Contractors Only)

This is where costs jump significantly. HB 444 doubled the general liability insurance minimum for Electrical Contractors from $500,000 to $1,000,000. Premiums vary based on your business size, claims history, and coverage area, but a $1M policy for a small electrical contracting firm in Kentucky typically runs $2,000 to $5,000 per year.

Workers' compensation insurance is mandatory if you have employees. Sole proprietors with no employees can file a notarized waiver instead.

Local Costs Most People Miss

The state license is only part of the picture. Every city and county where you work charges its own registration and permit fees:

Louisville Metro: Type A contractor license is $125/year; Type B (single project per year) is $50. Residential electrical permits start at a $200 base fee.

Lexington-Fayette: Local business license is $100. Electrical permits are a flat $10 each.

Every other jurisdiction: Occupational tax registration and business license fees vary. Most cities charge somewhere between $25 and $150 for annual business registration.
