Iowa HVAC License Renewal

The Three-Year Cycle

Iowa HVAC licenses expire on a fixed triennial schedule — not three years from when you got licensed, but on the same date for everyone in the state. The current cycle runs from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2029. Every individual trade license and contractor license renews within this window.

Licenses officially expire on June 30, but you can continue working through August 31 during the administrative grace period. After that, the late fees and work restrictions start compounding.

Continuing Education Requirements

To qualify for renewal, you must complete 8 hours of approved continuing education during each three-year cycle. The hours break down into specific categories:

• 2 hours of Mechanical Code updates (covering the currently adopted IMC)
• 4 hours of HVAC/Refrigeration discipline-specific training
• 2 hours of Safety education (Iowa Occupational Safety and Health standards)

At least 4 of those 8 hours must be completed in person. The remaining 4 can be done online through PMSB-approved providers.

If you hold multiple mechanical trade licenses — say HVAC-Refrigeration and Hydronics — the CE requirement increases to 14 hours: 2 hours of code, 8 hours of combined discipline-specific training, and 4 hours of safety.

Late Fees and Consequences

The penalty structure escalates quickly:

That last row is the one that catches people. If your license has been expired for more than a year, the PMSB treats it as void. You can't just pay a late fee and get reinstated — you have to submit a new application, pay full initial fees, and potentially retake the state examination. For a master licensee who serves as a company's Master of Record, a lapse can leave the business without an active qualifying master for that discipline. If the Master of Record dissociates, the business has a six-month grace period when it notifies the board within 30 days.

The Multi-License Discount

If you renew (or initially apply for) multiple licenses on the same day, Iowa offers a 30% discount on the combined license fees. The calculation:

1. Add up the fees for all journeyperson, master, and contractor licenses
2. Multiply the total by 0.70
3. Add the $150 contractor registration fee (not eligible for the discount)
4. Add any applicable paper application surcharges ($25)

The discount applies only when all applications are submitted simultaneously and on time. Late applications don't qualify.

Renewal Costs

Standard full-term renewal fees for the current cycle:

• Journeyperson license: $180
• Master license: $240
• Contractor license: $250
• Contractor registration: $150 (separate from the license fee)

These are the current-cycle full-term figures for the listed licenses. Filing the joint contractor application (license + registration) totals $400 for the full term.

When to Start Planning

Start your CE tracking early in the cycle. Waiting until Year 3 to complete all 8 hours creates scheduling pressure, especially for the 4 mandatory in-person hours. PMSB-approved courses fill up during the renewal rush, and the board may audit CE completion records.

Set a calendar reminder for May of Year 3. That's when the renewal window opens and when you can file without any late fees. Filing in June of Year 3 still avoids late penalties; applications submitted August 1–31 incur a $60 fee per license, and applications submitted September 1 or later incur a $100 fee per license.
