Indianapolis Contractor License Renewal

Every general contractor license in Indianapolis expires on the same date: December 31 of even-numbered years. That means the next expiration for every licensed contractor in Marion County is December 31, 2026 — and the renewal window opens well before that deadline.

Missing the renewal doesn't just mean a lapsed license. It means you can't pull building permits, which means active projects stall, subcontractors sit idle, and clients start asking questions you don't want to answer.

The Renewal Cycle

The Department of Business and Neighborhood Services (BNS) operates on a strict biennial licensing cycle. All general contractor licenses, regardless of when they were initially issued, expire together on December 31 of even-numbered years. The renewal fee is $247.

This is the same fee whether you're a high-volume commercial contractor or a sole proprietor running a small residential remodeling operation. There's no prorated option for renewals — that only applies to initial applications.

What You Need to Renew

The renewal process requires you to confirm that all of your compliance documents remain current:

Active surety bond. Your $10,000 bond must extend through the new licensing cycle. If your current bond expires on December 31, 2026, you'll need to secure a new bond with an expiration of December 31, 2028 before renewing. The obligee wording must still read "Consolidated City of Indianapolis and/or an Unknown Third Party," and continuous bonds are still not accepted.

Current general liability insurance. Your policy must maintain at least $500,000 per occurrence in combined bodily injury and property damage coverage, with the "Consolidated City of Indianapolis and Marion County" named as Additional Insured.

Workers' compensation. Either an active policy or, if you're eligible, the built-in waiver on page 2 of the company license application. If you've hired employees since your last renewal, you can no longer rely on the sole proprietor waiver.

Authorized agent list. If you've added or removed permit agents since your last renewal, update the list. The first five agents are included at no charge; each additional agent is $63.

How to Submit

Renewals are processed through the BNS licensing team. The process cannot be completed entirely online — submit the required documentation by email and confirm current processing times with BNS.

Don't wait until mid-December to start. If your surety agent needs to reissue a bond with updated expiration dates, or if your insurance carrier needs to update the Additional Insured endorsement, those revisions can take days. Starting the renewal process in October or November gives you a buffer for document corrections.

What Happens If You Miss the Deadline

If your license lapses on December 31 without a completed renewal, you lose your ability to pull permits in Marion County until BNS restores it to active status.

Ask BNS about the reactivation requirements; do not assume a lapsed license can be used while renewal is pending.

For contractors with active projects, a lapsed license creates immediate operational problems. Inspections get delayed, permit applications get rejected, and clients may have contractual grounds to terminate if you can't demonstrate active licensure.

Name Matching Still Applies

The same strict name-matching rules from your initial application carry through to renewals. Your business name on the renewal application must match your state registration, bond, and insurance exactly. If you've made any changes to your business structure — converting from a sole proprietorship to an LLC, for example — update your state registration through INBiz first, then reissue your bond and insurance documents to reflect the new legal name before submitting your renewal.
