How Apprentice Registration Works in Idaho

Every HVAC career in Idaho starts with apprentice registration through the Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses (DOPL). Registration costs $10 and requires that you're employed by, or have an offer from, a licensed HVAC contractor. There's no experience prerequisite and no entrance exam — the registration simply activates your ability to accumulate hours toward a journeyman license.

The minimum age is 18, with one exception: the School-to-Registered Apprenticeship Program (STRAP) allows students as young as 16 to register if they have a signed parental agreement and work for an approved STRAP provider. STRAP participants can begin logging verified field hours while still completing high school.

The Rule That Costs People Thousands of Hours

Here is the single most expensive mistake new HVAC workers make in Idaho: working before their apprentice registration is active. DOPL's policy is absolute — hours accumulated before your registration date, or during any lapse in registration, are permanently invalid and will never count toward your journeyman license.

This isn't a technicality that gets overlooked during audits. DOPL cross-references registration dates against work verification forms, and any hours claimed outside an active registration period are struck. If you work for six months before registering, those roughly 1,000 hours are gone regardless of documentation quality. Register first, then start working.

The same rule applies if your registration lapses and you keep working. Renew on time, every time.

OJT Hour Requirements

Idaho requires on-the-job training hours under the direct supervision of a licensed journeyman or contractor. The number of hours depends on which pathway you follow:

With an approved trade school: 8,000 OJT hours plus 576 classroom hours (typically four years of instruction at 144 hours per year). This is the standard pathway most Idaho apprentices follow.

Without trade school: 16,000 OJT hours of supervised field experience. The state doubles the hour requirement to compensate for the lack of formal classroom instruction.

All OJT hours must be documented on DOPL Work Verification Forms — one per employer, notarized, signed by your supervising licensee. The forms require specific task descriptions: duct fabrication, refrigerant handling, fuel gas piping, control wiring. Generic descriptions like "HVAC work" will trigger requests for more detail.

Approved Trade Schools

The DOPL HVAC Board maintains a list of approved institutions for the 576-hour classroom requirement. Current approved schools include:

• North Idaho College — Workforce Training Center in Post Falls and Parker Technical Education Center in Rathdrum
• College of Western Idaho — Nampa campus
• College of Southern Idaho — Twin Falls campus
• College of Eastern Idaho — Idaho Falls campus
• Idaho State University — Continuing Education/Workforce Training in Pocatello
• Lewis-Clark State College
• Regional Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committees — SE Idaho Sheet Metal JATC, SW Central Idaho Sheet Metal JATC, and SW Idaho JATC

Several private programs are also approved, including Porter House Inc. (Shelley and Mountain Home), Northwest HVAC/R, and HVACR Education Online for distance learners.

An important clarification: completing school hours qualifies you to sit for the PSI exam, but DOPL will not issue your journeyman license until you also submit notarized verification of the full 8,000 OJT hours. Some trade school materials suggest you can get licensed immediately upon graduation — you can test, but the license itself is held until the field hours are verified.

Supervision Requirements

"Direct supervision" in Idaho means your supervising journeyman or contractor must be available to observe and direct your work. The supervisor's license must be active during the entire period you're claiming hours — if their license was suspended, expired, or inactive, your hours under that person during that time are invalid.

Each supervisor signs off on specific tasks and date ranges through the notarized Work Verification Forms. Fraudulent experience documentation is treated seriously: it's classified as a misdemeanor and results in immediate revocation of your apprentice registration and a permanent ban from exam eligibility.

From Apprentice to Journeyman

Once you've met the hour requirements through either pathway, the sequence to the journeyman license is:

1. Register with PSI Services and schedule the journeyman exam ($75)
2. Pass the exam (120 questions, four hours, 70% to pass, open-book)
3. Submit your DOPL application with the passing score report, all notarized Work Verification Forms, and the $35 processing fee
4. Wait for DOPL processing (typically two to four weeks)
