The Biennial Renewal Cycle

Florida electrical contractor licenses renew every two years. The deadline is August 31 of even-numbered years — so the current cycle runs through August 31, 2026, with the next renewal due August 31, 2028. Miss the deadline and you'll pay a $25 delinquent surcharge on top of the renewal fee.

This applies to both Certified Electrical Contractor (EC) and Registered Electrical Contractor (ER) licenses issued through the DBPR's Electrical Contractors' Licensing Board (ECLB).

Renewal Fees

These are the state fees. Local county competency cards have their own separate renewal fees and cycles set by each county's CTQB.

Continuing Education: 11 Hours, Not 14

A common mistake is confusing ECLB requirements with Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) requirements. General construction contractors need 14 hours of CE per biennium. Electrical contractors need 11 hours. The breakdown is specific and mandatory:

If you hold an alarm system contractor license in addition to your EC or ER, two of your six technical hours must cover false alarm prevention.

Courses must be approved by the ECLB; confirm the current record-submission process with the provider or DBPR.

Pro-Ration for New Licensees

If you received your license less than 12 months before the August 31 renewal date, you owe zero CE hours for that cycle. If your license was active for more than 12 months but less than two years before the renewal date, you need only five hours: one each of Workers' Compensation, Workplace Safety, Business Practices, Laws and Rules, and Technical.

Inactive Status

If you want to stop practicing temporarily without surrendering your license, confirm the current inactive-status process and its CE and renewal consequences with DBPR before changing the license status.

Reactivation is subject to the applicable DBPR process; confirm the current CE, fee, and timing requirements before relying on an inactive status.

What Happens If You Let It Lapse

A license not renewed by the deadline incurs the $25 delinquent surcharge. Before resuming work after a prolonged lapse, confirm the applicable DBPR status and reinstatement steps.

For ER license holders, there's an additional risk: if your local county competency card lapses, your state registration lapses automatically. Even if you renew your state ER license, an expired local card voids your permitting privileges in that jurisdiction. You'll need to renew the local card with the county CTQB separately.

The Local Card Renewal Trap

This is the piece that trips up ER contractors. Your state ER license and your local competency card are independent documents with independent renewal cycles. The state renews biennially on August 31 of even years. Your county card renews on whatever schedule your local board sets — and they don't coordinate. Let either one lapse and you lose your ability to work, even if the other is current.

Maintaining both renewals, tracking both CE requirements, and keeping both sets of insurance current is part of the ongoing overhead of the ER path. It's one reason many contractors eventually pursue an EC license — one state credential, one renewal cycle, no local card dependencies.
