Connecticut TEAM Mentoring Program — Requirements, Timeline, and When You Can Skip It

Most new Connecticut public school teachers go through the TEAM program — Teacher Education and Mentoring. It's a mandatory two-year induction that sits between getting your Initial Certificate and qualifying for the Professional tier. Skipping it isn't optional for most educators, but there are legitimate exemptions.

What TEAM Actually Involves

When you're hired by a Connecticut school district, the district's Local Coordinating Committee pairs you with a trained mentor teacher. You're registered on the CTTEAM dashboard, which tracks your progress through the required professional growth modules.

Over two academic years, you'll:

• Complete structured professional development modules with your assigned mentor
• Submit reflective papers signed by your mentor at each stage
• Meet regularly with your mentor to discuss classroom practice, student engagement, and professional growth

TEAM is administered at the district level but governed by the CSDE Talent Office. The program costs nothing — there's no fee for participation, and mentors are provided by your employing district.

Why TEAM Matters for Your Career

TEAM completion is one of the three requirements for advancing from the Initial to the Professional Educator Certificate. The full list:

1. 50 school months of successful teaching in Connecticut
2. Completion of the TEAM program (or an approved exemption)
3. A master's degree in your teaching content area (for educators first certified after 2018)

Under the new two-tier system, you have a ten-year Initial Certificate window to complete all three. The old three-year window created artificial pressure; the expanded timeline is the point of the 2025 reform.

Who Can Skip TEAM

Out-of-state educators with at least 50 school months of successful teaching experience within the past 10 years are exempt from TEAM. To claim this exemption, you need your former school districts to submit signed Form ED 126 (Statement of Professional Experience) directly to the CSDE — original wet signatures required, mailed physically.

With TEAM waived, you can apply directly for the Professional Educator Certificate once you have the required master's degree and $375 advancement fee.

Educators who hold a Provisional Certificate that was valid on July 1, 2025, still need to account for their TEAM status when applying under the new structure. Professional Certificate requirements include TEAM completion or a formal exemption.

What TEAM Isn't

TEAM is a state induction program, not a teacher evaluation. Your district runs its own performance evaluation system separately. TEAM completion doesn't affect your salary step or seniority — those are negotiated locally through collective-bargaining agreements.

Also, TEAM doesn't apply to every school position. It's required for public school educators with an Initial Certificate. Private school teachers and administrators on different certificate tracks have separate (or no) induction requirements.
