Alaska Mechanical Administrator License Categories
Alaska's Mechanical Administrator license isn't one credential — it's four distinct categories, each authorizing you to supervise a different scope of mechanical work. Picking the wrong category means you can't legally oversee the projects you're bidding on.
The Four Categories
Unlimited HVAC/Sheet Metal (UHVCS): The broadest HVAC category. Covers heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and sheet metal fabrication and installation for all building types — residential, commercial, and industrial. Also authorizes supervision of control wiring retrofits at 48 volts or less.
Unlimited Refrigeration (UR): Covers commercial and industrial refrigeration systems — walk-in coolers, blast freezers, ice rinks, and industrial process cooling. This is a separate license from UHVCS. If your company does both HVAC and commercial refrigeration, you need an administrator holding both categories (or two different administrators).
Heating, Cooling, and Process Piping (HCPP): Covers hydronic heating systems, fuel oil piping, and process piping. This category overlaps with plumbing in some areas — an HCPP administrator can supervise fuel gas piping and hydronic systems but cannot authorize connections to potable water or sanitary drainage, which require an Unlimited Commercial and Industrial Plumbing (UCIP) administrator.
Residential HVAC (RHVC): A limited-scope category for residential heating, cooling, and ventilation work only. Lower experience requirements make it faster to obtain, but it restricts you to residential projects.

All categories accept an alternative path: an accredited engineering degree plus 1 year of hands-on or field engineering experience within the past 3 years.
Trade Boundary Rules
This is where the categories create real operational constraints:
Control wiring: A UHVCS administrator can supervise the retrofitting of control wiring at 48 volts or less, as long as it doesn't alter the building's electrical system characteristics. Original control wiring installation, or any alteration that alters the electrical characteristics of the system, requires an Electrical Administrator.
Plumbing crossovers: An HCPP administrator can handle fuel oil piping and hydronic heating circuits. But the moment the work touches potable water supply, drainage, waste, or sanitary venting, you need a UCIP administrator and tradespeople holding Plumber Certificates of Fitness.
Refrigerant handling: All categories involving refrigerant work still require individual technicians to hold EPA Section 608 certification. The administrator license authorizes supervision — the EPA card authorizes physical refrigerant handling.

Choosing the Right Category
If you're starting a general residential HVAC business: RHVC gets you operational fastest with only 2 years of experience. But it limits you to residential work, and you'll need to upgrade if commercial contracts come your way.
If you want maximum flexibility: UHVCS covers the broadest range of HVAC work. Most contractors who plan to take commercial projects start here.
If your business focuses on supermarket refrigeration, cold storage, or industrial cooling: UR is mandatory — UHVCS doesn't cover commercial refrigeration systems.
If you do boiler work and hydronic heating: HCPP is designed for that scope, though UHVCS also covers heating systems. The HCPP category becomes important when fuel oil piping and process piping are central to your work.
You can hold multiple categories simultaneously. Each requires its own exam and application, but they all renew on the same biennial cycle.
