TEAMS Contract Alabama Teachers — Math and Science Salary Schedule

The Teacher Excellence and Accountability for Mathematics and Science (TEAMS) Act provides an increased salary schedule for eligible math, science, and computer science teachers. Separately, Alabama's educator-certification rule assesses a minimum penalty of $500 per teacher per year against the employing board when a teacher is assigned one or more periods a day in a field for which the teacher is not properly certified.

The certification penalty and TEAMS full-time course requirement are separate rules:

• If you hold only a math certificate but are assigned even one daily general science period, the board is subject to a minimum $500 annual penalty under the out-of-field rule
• For TEAMS, your employing district's PowerSchool schedule must confirm that you teach approved math, science, or computer science courses full time
• Districts verify this during the alternative certification process — the superintendent uploads your schedule as part of the CCTF or PCTF application

How to Qualify

To be eligible for a TEAMS contract, you need:

1. An appropriate Alabama certificate or alternate certificate for the math, science, or computer science courses you teach
2. A full-time teaching assignment in approved math, science, or computer science courses
3. A recommendation from your local superintendent, followed by local board of education approval of your TEAMS contract

The certificate itself can come through any of Alabama's standard routes — traditional university program, Alternative Class A, PCTF, CCTF through an ATPO, or reciprocity. What matters is the final endorsement matching your assignment.

If you're coming through an alternative route, you won't hold a standard Professional Educator Certificate immediately — you'll have a provisional or conditional credential first. 1. Check degree and GPA eligibility for your route; Math/Science fields with a prescribed Praxis subject test generally do not require a matching major or subject-credit minimum. With a 2.0–2.49 GPA, CCTF/PCTF applicants need either an increased Praxis score or six semester hours in the teaching field
2. Pass the Praxis Subject Assessment in Mathematics or your specific Science area ($120-$170)
3. Secure a teaching position in a TEAMS-participating district
4. Have the employing superintendent request your CCTF through an ALSDE-approved ATPO (American Board's standard program fee is $1,900) or a PCTF (district-requested; candidates without a current Alabama Professional Educator Certificate complete coursework in four required areas, up to 12 semester hours, within the four-year PCTF window)
5. Complete the edTPA or Praxis PLT and your ATMP mentoring requirements within the certificate window
6. Convert to a standard Professional Educator Certificate
