How Many CE Hours Do You Need?

The OCILB requires continuing education for every commercial plumbing contractor license renewal. The amount depends on which renewal cycle you choose:

• Annual renewal ($60 fee): 8 hours of CE
• Triennial renewal ($180 fee): 24 hours of CE

These hours must be completed before your renewal date. Missing the deadline means a $30 late fee, and if your license lapses for more than one year, you must start the full licensing process over — new application, new background checks, new exams.

The Online Hours Cap Is Strict

Ohio places hard limits on self-paced online courses:

• Annual renewal: Maximum 4 hours of self-paced online CE
• Triennial renewal: Maximum 12 hours of self-paced online CE

The remaining hours must come from live in-person instruction or live webinar courses. "Live webinar" means a real-time session with an instructor — pre-recorded videos that you watch on your own schedule count as self-paced, not live.

This cap catches many contractors off guard. You cannot satisfy your full CE requirement by working through an online course catalog over a weekend. At least half your hours must involve real-time instruction.

What Counts as Approved CE

The OCILB maintains a list of approved continuing education providers. Courses must cover content relevant to the plumbing trade — code updates, installation methods, safety standards, or business and law topics related to contracting.

Common CE providers in Ohio include trade associations like PHCC of Ohio, supply house training programs, and specialized CE companies that offer both live and online options. Costs vary widely: self-paced online courses tend to run $15–$30 per hour, while live seminars can cost $50–$75 per hour.

Make sure your provider is OCILB-approved before paying for a course. Hours from non-approved providers will not count toward renewal, and you will not find out until your renewal is processed.

The 40-Hour Pre-Licensing CE Track

There is a separate CE pathway that applies to applicants who lack traditional experience documentation. If you cannot produce the standard five years of W-2 records and matching permits, you may qualify to sit for the OCILB exams by completing 40 hours of live or webinar-based code courses from an OCILB-approved provider within one year of applying.

This option was introduced to expand access to the state contractor exam for experienced tradespeople whose work history does not fit the standard documentation requirements — for example, someone who has been doing plumbing work for years but whose employer did not pull permits properly.

The 40 hours must be live or webinar instruction. Self-paced online courses do not count toward this pre-licensing track. The courses must be non-duplicated, meaning you cannot repeat the same course multiple times to reach the 40-hour threshold.

Tracking Your Hours

Keep your own records. Save certificates of completion from every CE course, noting the provider name, date, hours, and whether it was live or self-paced. The OCILB may audit your CE records during renewal processing, and reconstructing your course history after the fact is difficult.

If you hold both a state OCILB license and municipal credentials, check whether your city accepts state-level CE toward local renewal requirements. Some cities maintain separate CE requirements that do not overlap with the state system.
