Different Licenses, Different Deadlines

North Dakota doesn't use a single renewal date for all electrician licenses. Each category has its own annual expiration:

Missing your deadline has consequences: for apprentices, hours worked while unregistered are permanently forfeited. For licensed categories, a lapsed license means you can't legally perform electrical work until you're reinstated.

Continuing Education Requirements

Every license category above apprentice requires 8 hours of continuing education per renewal cycle. At least 4 of those 8 hours must cover NEC code updates.

The NDSEB maintains a list of approved CE providers and courses. You need to complete your CE before your renewal deadline and have documentation ready if the board requests verification. Generic electrical safety webinars or manufacturer product training don't count unless they're on the board's approved list.

The 2026 NEC Transition

North Dakota officially adopted the 2026 edition of the National Electrical Code effective July 1, 2026. All approved continuing education courses and state licensing exams have been aligned exclusively with the 2026 NEC since May 1, 2026.

If you're completing CE hours for your current renewal cycle, make sure your courses cover the 2026 NEC — not the 2023 edition. Courses based on the older code won't satisfy the requirement after the transition date.

How to Renew

The NDSEB accepts online renewals through its website portal. You'll need your license number, payment for the renewal fee, and confirmation that your CE hours are complete.

Key points:

• Renew before your deadline, not on it — online systems can experience delays
• Keep copies of your CE completion certificates for at least two renewal cycles
• If you've changed employers, update your information with the board during the renewal process

What Happens If You Lapse

For apprentices, the consequence is hour forfeiture — well-documented and non-negotiable. For journeymen, masters, Class B, and Power-Limited licensees, a lapsed license means you can't work in the trade until you complete the reinstatement process, which may involve additional fees, current CE verification, and board review.

The more expensive consequence is often indirect: contractors can't pull permits or bid on work during a lapse, which means lost revenue and potential contract penalties.
