Nevada Remote Online Notary

Nevada allows notaries to perform notarial acts over a live audio-video connection — the signer can be anywhere in the world while you notarize from Nevada. But the registration process is strictly sequential, and applicants who try to run it concurrently with their traditional commission application get rejected automatically.

You Need a Traditional Commission First

This is the single most important rule, and the one that trips up the most applicants: you cannot register as an electronic or remote online notary until your traditional Nevada notary commission is fully active and in "Good Standing" with the Secretary of State.

That means completing the entire traditional commissioning process — training, exam, bond, county filing, state business portal application, and the four-to-six-week state processing wait — before you start the electronic notary path.

RON vs. eNotary — What Nevada Means

Nevada manages both electronic notarization and remote online notarization under a single "Electronic Notary Public" registration. The distinction:

Electronic Notary (eNotary): the signer is physically in the same room as you. The difference from traditional notarization is that you use electronic signatures, a digital seal, and a digital journal instead of paper and ink.

Remote Online Notary (RON): the signer appears over a real-time audio-video connection. You verify their identity using multi-factor authentication — credential analysis plus knowledge-based authentication — and record the session.

Both are covered by one registration on the state business portal (SilverFlume during the transition to Project ORION). You do not apply separately for eNotary and RON.

Registration Steps

Once your traditional commission is active:

1. Contract with an approved technology provider to obtain a secure digital certificate and electronic seal exemplar. Nevada requires you to use a state-approved platform — check the Secretary of State's approved vendor list.

2. Complete the electronic notary training course: "(103) State of Nevada Electronic Notary Public Course" on the official training portal at training.nvsos-training.com.

3. Pass the electronic notary exam: "(104) State of Nevada Electronic Notary Public Exam" — same 80% passing score, same 24-hour retake wait if you fail.

4. Submit your registration on the state business portal: upload your PDF seal exemplar and training proof, and pay the $95 fee ($50 registration + $45 training).

Your eNotary registration runs concurrently with your traditional commission term. When you renew your traditional commission, you must also renew your electronic registration.

Location Rules

Under NRS 240.1993, reinforced by Assembly Bill 72 (effective January 1, 2026), you must be physically located within Nevada at the exact moment you perform any remote online notarial act. The signer can be anywhere — another state, another country — but you cannot be sitting in California or working from a vacation rental in Arizona.

This rule applies even if your traditional commission is based on non-resident status (i.e., you live in an adjoining state but work in Nevada). For RON sessions specifically, you must be within Nevada's borders during the call.

What It Costs

The eNotary/RON registration adds $95 in state fees on top of your traditional commission costs. Platform subscription costs vary by provider — some charge monthly fees, others per-transaction pricing. Budget an additional $20 to $50 per month for platform access and digital certificate maintenance, depending on which approved provider you choose.
