The Biennial Renewal Cycle

Every Nebraska electrical license and apprentice registration expires on December 31 of even-numbered years. There are no rolling renewal dates based on your original issue date — the entire state renews on the same cycle.

This creates a predictable two-year rhythm, but it also means the consequences of missing the deadline are locked to a fixed calendar. Miss it, and you're operating on a hard timeline with escalating penalties.

The 12-Hour CE Requirement

To renew, you must complete 12 contact hours of state-approved continuing education. The content split is mandatory:

• Minimum 6 hours focused directly on the current National Electrical Code (currently the 2023 NEC, adopted August 1, 2024)
• Remaining 6 hours from approved topics: electrical theory, blueprint reading, transformer operation, motor controls, or other Board-approved subjects

All 12 hours must come from state-approved providers. The Board maintains a searchable list of approved courses and providers on the NSED portal. Hours from non-approved providers won't count, even if the content is relevant.

The Webcam Mandate

This is the rule that surprises most electricians doing their CE online. Nebraska enforces a strict security standard for remote continuing education: online courses must be completed on a webcam-enabled device. Providers are required to use facial recognition or photo validation software to monitor you continuously and verify your identity for the entire duration of the course.

Confirm a provider's webcam and identity-validation requirements before enrolling; if the required verification cannot be completed, do not rely on those hours for renewal.

Deadlines and Penalties

The renewal timeline runs like this:

• Before December 1 of the even year: Standard renewal window. Submit your CE certificates and renewal fee through the NSED portal
• December 1–31: A 10% late fee is assessed on top of the renewal fee
• January 1–March 31 of the odd year: Grace period. The license is expired, and you cannot legally perform electrical work. Renewal is still possible, but you're paying the renewal fee plus a 10% monthly penalty (cumulative)
• After March 31: The license is permanently canceled. No renewal option. You must submit a new application and pass the state exam again

The difference between renewing on November 30 and renewing on April 1 is the difference between paying a standard fee and starting the entire licensing process over from scratch.

How to Renew

Renewal is processed through the NSED online portal (migrated to the Tyler Technologies platform in April 2026). You'll need:

1. Completed CE certificates showing 12 approved hours
2. Payment of the biennial renewal fee (varies by credential class)
3. Updated contact and employment information

Passing the exam grants a one-time credit of 6 CE hours toward your first renewal cycle, so new licensees have a lighter load their first time around.
