When HVAC Technicians Need a Gas Fitter License

Every time you disconnect, reconnect, or alter a fuel gas line during an HVAC installation — a furnace swap, a boiler replacement, relocating a gas connection for a new rooftop unit — you are performing gas fitting work under Massachusetts law. The Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters (248 CMR) governs this work, and you need their credential to do it legally.

This trips up HVAC technicians who are licensed for refrigeration or sheet metal but assume they can also handle the gas piping on a furnace install. They cannot. Gas fitting is a separate trade in Massachusetts with its own licensing ladder.

The License Tiers

Apprentice Gas Fitter. Register through the Division of Apprentice Standards and apply through the eLIPSE portal. Application fee: $40. Biennial renewal: $40, on May 1st of even-numbered years.

Journeyman Gas Fitter. After completing your apprentice hours and passing the board's exam, you can perform gas fitting work independently under the supervision of a master. You cannot pull gas permits — that authority stays with the master. Application fee: $75. Biennial renewal: $52, on May 1st of even-numbered years.

Master Gas Fitter. The master credential lets you pull gas permits, supervise journeymen and apprentices, and serve as the qualifying licensee for a plumbing/gas corporation. Application fee: $100. Biennial renewal: $97, on May 1st of even-numbered years.

Gas Fitter vs. Plumber: Overlapping Boards

In Massachusetts, gas fitting and plumbing fall under the same board. A Master Plumber can also hold gas fitter credentials, and many do. If your HVAC business also handles hydronic heating system piping or boiler connections, you may need both the plumbing and gas fitter credentials.

For a corporation to pull gas permits, it must designate a Master Gas Fitter (or Master Plumber with gas fitter authority) as its qualifying licensee. The Plumbing/Gas Corporation license costs $225 for both application and biennial renewal on May 1st of even-numbered years.

How Gas Fitting Connects to the Rest of HVAC Licensing

A full-service HVAC installation on a gas-fired split system typically requires four separate permits: sheet metal (for ductwork), gas (for fuel connections), electrical (for line-voltage wiring), and mechanical/building (for the equipment itself). Each permit must be pulled by a licensee in that trade — your Master Sheet Metal credential does not let you pull the gas permit, and vice versa.

For a business owner, this means either holding multiple master-level credentials personally or hiring qualified "Responsible Craftsmen" to serve as the licensed individual of record for each trade.
