The Dedimus Justice oath ceremony is the one cost that varies. Some municipalities offer it for free, while others charge a small fee — typically under $10. Call your local town hall to confirm.

What Vendor Packages Include vs. What You Need

Commercial notary supply vendors sell packages ranging from $36 to $257 that bundle stamps, journals, embossers, carrying bags, desk signs, foil stickers, and sometimes E&O insurance or "training" courses.

The value test is simple: a self-inking stamp ($15–$40) and a bound journal ($10–$25) cover your practical needs for under $65. An embosser adds $25–$40 if you want a secondary seal. Everything beyond that — the desk sign, the custom carrying bag, the foil stickers — is personal preference, not operational necessity.

Before purchasing a bundle, total up the individual items you actually need and compare. Some bundles save money; many charge a premium for items you will never use.

Additional Costs for Electronic and Remote Notarization

If you expand into electronic (IPEN) or remote online (RON) notarization, the cost structure shifts. The state charges no filing fee for the Notice to Perform, but the commercial costs include:

• RON platform subscription: Ranges from free basic tiers with per-transaction fees to $49+/month for professional accounts
• Digital certificate (X.509): Your technology provider typically facilitates this as part of onboarding
• Electronic stamp creation: Usually included in platform setup
• Provider training: Required by the state, offered by the platform — may be included in subscription or charged separately

These ongoing costs are specific to your chosen platform and business volume. A notary who handles a few remote transactions per month may work fine on a free-tier plan, while a high-volume signing agent needs a professional subscription.

The E&O Insurance Decision

Since Maine does not require a surety bond, your personal assets are directly exposed if you make a mistake during a notarization that causes financial harm to someone. A surety bond would protect the public; E&O insurance protects you.

For general notarial work, a $25,000 policy typically costs $25 to $50 per year. If you plan to work as a loan signing agent, title companies and mortgage lenders commonly require at least $100,000 in E&O coverage — those policies run $70 to $120 annually.
