Four Pathways to an Indiana Teaching Credential

Indiana doesn't have a single route into the classroom. The Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) recognizes four primary pathways, and the right one depends entirely on where you're starting from.

Traditional preparation is the straightforward path for education majors. You complete a bachelor's degree at a state-approved educator preparation program (EPP), pass your Praxis content and pedagogy exams, and the university recommends you for an Initial Practitioner License through LVIS 360.

Transition to Teaching (T2T) is the accelerated alternative for anyone who already holds a bachelor's degree in a non-education field. You enroll in an approved T2T program, get a three-year non-renewable T2T Permit, and teach with full pay while finishing up to 18 credit hours (secondary) or up to 24 credit hours (elementary K-6 or early childhood P-3). GPA minimums: a straight 3.0, or a 2.5 paired with five years of professional experience, or a passing score on your Praxis content exam.

Interstate reciprocity handles out-of-state licensed teachers. Indiana evaluates your credentials individually — it's not an automatic transfer. If the IDOE identifies coursework or testing gaps, you'll receive a deficiency letter and can teach on a One-Year Reciprocal Permit while clearing them.

Emergency permits fill critical staffing gaps. A school corporation, not the candidate, must request this permit from the IDOE. You need at least a bachelor's degree, and the permit is valid for one year.

The LVIS 360 Application Process

Every pathway funnels through the same portal: LVIS 360, the IDOE's Licensing Verification and Information System. Here's the sequence that trips up most applicants.

First, register for an Access Indiana account at access.in.gov. This single sign-on connects to LVIS and several other state systems. Once inside LVIS, you'll create an educator profile and begin your application.

Second, arrange for official transcripts to be sent directly to the IDOE. If your degree is from an out-of-state institution, you'll pay a non-refundable $35 credential evaluation fee. The IDOE's manual review takes four to eight weeks.

Third, complete all four mandatory safety trainings before submitting your application. LVIS validates these at the application stage — if any are missing, your file gets flagged.

Fourth, pay the $35 license application fee. This is separate from the evaluation fee and also non-refundable. If your application is returned for missing documents, you have 90 days to fix it before the IDOE closes the file and you lose both fees.

Mandatory Safety Trainings

Indiana requires four safety certifications for every initial license and permit:

CPR/AED/Heimlich from an IDOE-approved provider. The critical detail: this must include in-person, hands-on practice on a mannequin. Online-only CPR certifications are rejected, and this catches more applicants than any other requirement.

Suicide prevention training — at least 60 minutes, with the Jason Foundation and Youth Mental Health First Aid being the most widely used programs.

Human trafficking recognition and reporting — mandated under IC 20-28-5-12.3. Promissory notes are not accepted; you need the actual completion certificate.

Child abuse and neglect detection — required for all initial credentials, renewals, and license conversions under IC 20-28-3-4.5 and IC 20-28-5-12.5.

Testing: What You Need to Pass

Indiana uses the ETS Praxis assessment suite. The specific exams depend on your license type:

Elementary (K-6) candidates need the Elementary Education Assessment (subtests 5007 and 5008 at $85 each, or $209 combined), the PLT K-6 pedagogy exam (5622, $146), and the Praxis 5205 Teaching Reading: Elementary ($156) to satisfy the Science of Reading mandate.

Secondary (5-12) candidates need their subject-specific content exam ($120 each) plus the PLT 7-12 pedagogy exam (5624, $146).

Register through the ETS Praxis portal and set the Indiana Department of Education (state recipient code 7238) as an automatic score recipient. Scores take 7 to 10 business days to transmit. If you don't pass, there's a mandatory 28-day waiting period before you can retake the same exam.

A useful safety net: ETS's "Free After 3" policy gives you unlimited free retake vouchers after three paid attempts on the same exam code.

Licensing and Hiring: Two Separate Background Screenings

The Indiana licensing and hiring process uses two distinct background checks, and confusing them is a common and costly mistake.

The state licensing check is a name-based Limited Criminal History search through the Indiana State Police. Cost: $15 for Access Indiana subscribers, $16.32 for non-subscribers. You run this yourself online, and results must be uploaded to LVIS within 60 days of your application.

The employer screening is an Expanded National Criminal History Check and Child Protection Index Check, mandated when a school district hires you. This uses fingerprint databases, FBI records, and child welfare registries. It's conducted by vendors like Safe Hiring Solutions or IdentoGO and costs $28 to $65. Results go directly to the hiring district, not to you.

Timeline: How Long Does It Actually Take?

Traditional preparation: four years (integrated with your bachelor's degree).

Transition to Teaching: 8 to 12 weeks from enrollment to classroom entry under your T2T Permit, then 12 to 18 months to complete the program and earn your full Initial Practitioner License.

Interstate reciprocity: immediate classroom entry on a Reciprocal Permit if you have a clean evaluation, or up to 12 months to clear deficiency requirements.

Emergency permit: immediate entry once the school corporation files the request and you meet the minimum requirements.

LVIS processing adds time on top of any pathway. Out-of-state manual evaluations are estimated at four to eight weeks; other processing times vary.

What to Do Next

The most expensive mistake in this process isn't failing a test — it's submitting an incomplete LVIS application and losing your non-refundable fees to the 90-day closure window.
