Indiana Emergency Teaching License

What an Emergency Permit Actually Is

Indiana's emergency teaching permit exists to solve one specific problem: a school corporation has a classroom that needs a teacher and can't fill it through normal channels. This isn't a pathway you choose — it's a backstop the district activates when they're out of other options.

The most important thing to understand: you cannot apply for an emergency permit yourself. Only the employing school corporation can request one through LVIS 360. The district requests it for a position it has been unable to staff.

Requirements for the Candidate

The eligibility bar for an emergency permit is lower than standard licensure, but it's not zero:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. This is non-negotiable — Indiana doesn't issue emergency permits to candidates without at least a four-year degree.

The four mandatory safety trainings: CPR with hands-on mannequin practice from an IDOE-approved provider, suicide prevention (minimum 60 minutes), human trafficking recognition, and child abuse/neglect detection. All four certificates must be uploaded to your LVIS 360 profile.

A state background check — the name-based Limited Criminal History search through the Indiana State Police ($15-$16.32). Results must be current within 60 days of your LVIS application.

The emergency-permit route does not require completion of a full preparation program. Ask the school corporation and IDOE which assessments apply to your specific permit.

How the Application Process Works

The school corporation's HR or licensing coordinator initiates everything:

They identify the unfilled position and submit the emergency permit request through the LVIS 360 Corporation Work Queue, identifying you as the candidate. The district superintendent or authorized administrator signs off on the request in LVIS.

On your end, you need an Access Indiana account linked to an active LVIS 360 educator profile. Your safety training certificates and background check must already be uploaded before the corporation can process the permit request.

Once the IDOE approves the request, the permit is issued digitally through LVIS. The district should confirm any applicable LVIS fee before submitting the request.

Limitations and Expiration

Emergency permits come with hard constraints:

One year, renewable annually. Each renewal requires the school corporation to resubmit the request and re-document the staffing need.

Assignment-specific. The permit request is tied to the position the corporation identified; confirm any assignment limits with the district.

No special education. Indiana does not issue standard emergency permits for special education positions. Special education staffing shortfalls use a separate Alternative Special Education License pathway with its own requirements.

Employer-specific. The employing corporation requests the permit. If you change districts, have the new corporation confirm whether it must submit a new request.

What Happens After Your Emergency Permit

An emergency permit buys you time in the classroom, but it isn't a long-term credential. Indiana expects you to work toward full licensure while teaching under the permit.

Most emergency permit holders transition to one of two paths:

Transition to Teaching (T2T) — the most common next step. If your GPA qualifies (3.0 cumulative, or 2.5 with five years of professional experience, or a passing Praxis content score), you can enroll in an approved T2T program and move toward a three-year T2T Permit. This gives you a longer runway and a clear path to an Initial Practitioner License.

Traditional EPP enrollment — if you want the full university experience, you can enroll in an approved educator preparation program while continuing to teach. The program coordinates your clinical placement requirements around your existing teaching role.

The worst outcome is letting your emergency permit expire without making progress toward a standard credential. The school corporation can renew it annually, but districts increasingly expect emergency permit holders to show enrollment in a certification pathway.

Is an Emergency Permit Right for You?

If a school district has offered you a position and you have a bachelor's degree but no teaching credential, the emergency permit gets you into the classroom once the corporation submits the request and the IDOE approves it. It's a direct bridge from a staffing need to teaching while you work toward a standard license.

But it's a bridge, not a destination. The sooner you start working toward a standard license, the more career options you'll have. The Indiana Teacher Certification Guide breaks down exactly how to transition from an emergency permit to full licensure, including the T2T timeline and program cost comparisons.
