How HVAC Apprenticeships Work in Massachusetts

Massachusetts does not issue a single "HVAC apprentice" license. Because the state splits HVAC work across multiple boards, your apprenticeship path depends on the trade you are entering: refrigeration, sheet metal, gas fitting, or a combination. Each board has its own apprentice registration, its own hour requirements, and its own exam at the end.

For the refrigeration, sheet metal, and gas-fitting paths, the Division of Apprentice Standards (DAS) is part of the process. Before your on-the-job hours count toward a state licensing exam, confirm that the required DAS registration is in place.

Refrigeration Apprenticeship

For covered work on systems of ten tons or greater, outside the 522 CMR 9.00 exemptions, you need a state Refrigeration Technician license through OPSI. To get there, you start as a Refrigeration Apprentice — and here is where most people get tripped up.

You must hold two concurrent registrations: a DAS apprenticeship registration and an active OPSI apprentice license. Both must overlap for every hour you log. If your DAS registration is active but your OPSI apprentice license has lapsed, every hour worked during that gap is void. OPSI will reject those hours when you apply for the technician exam, and there is no retroactive fix.

For applications dated and received before November 9, 2026, you can qualify for the technician exam through three pathways: 6,000 OJT hours with 250 classroom hours, 4,000 OJT with 500, or 2,000 OJT with 1,000. On or after that date, the only pathway is 6,000 OJT hours with 450 classroom hours. The classroom curriculum must include both refrigeration theory and Massachusetts electrical code training.

Your supervising employer must hold a valid Massachusetts Refrigeration Contractor license. Hours logged under an unlicensed contractor do not count.

Sheet Metal Apprenticeship

For ductwork and air distribution, you need a Sheet Metal Worker license from the Board of Examiners of Sheet Metal Workers. The apprentice license is $65, renewed biennially for $40.

The unrestricted journeyperson exam (J-1) requires 8,000 apprentice hours and 750 classroom hours. The restricted exam (J-2) — covering residential buildings under three stories and commercial under 10,000 square feet — requires 4,800 hours and 450 classroom hours. Both require CORI authorization and a DAS-registered program.

Gas Fitting Apprenticeship

Gas fitter apprenticeships fall under the Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters. If you connect, disconnect, or alter fuel gas lines as part of HVAC installations, you need this credential. Apprentice application fee: $40, with biennial renewals on May 1st of even-numbered years.

Protecting Your Hours

The single biggest risk in the refrigeration apprenticeship is losing hours you have already worked. The state rejects hours when your OPSI apprentice license lapsed during the work period, your employer's Refrigeration Contractor license was not active, or your DAS registration was not in place.

Check your OPSI or eLIPSE account status every renewal cycle. Confirm your employer's license number before starting with a new company. Keep your own copies of every time log and employer verification letter — the state does not maintain backup records for you.
