Contractors who work in Indianapolis often assume they can take on projects in Carmel or Fishers with the same license. They can't. Hamilton County sits directly north of Marion County, but its building department operates under completely different rules — and your Indianapolis BNS license has no standing there.

Hamilton County Building Department Registration

Hamilton County has its own contractor-registration and permitting requirements. Confirm the current process with the county building department before pulling permits; do not assume that the Indianapolis process applies.

The current county application controls which business-registration, insurance, workers' compensation, and other documents must accompany the application. Ask the building department for the current packet and confirm whether registration is required for your project and location.

Carmel and Fishers

The cities of Carmel and Fishers are incorporated municipalities within Hamilton County. While they coordinate with the county building department on many code enforcement matters, each city maintains its own permitting requirements.

Contractors working within Carmel city limits should confirm current registration requirements with the city's building department. For Fishers, contact the city department responsible for contractor registration. Each city's current instructions control the registration and permit documents; do not assume that Hamilton County's process applies inside an incorporated municipality.

The Indianapolis fees, bond wording, and 60-day orientation deadline are BNS-specific. Do not carry those requirements into Hamilton County or its cities without confirming the local rules. Insurance certificate-holder and additional-insured wording likewise must follow the instructions of the authority handling the permit.

Any general liability minimum and certificate-of-insurance requirements should be confirmed with the relevant building department before coverage is ordered.

When a COI is required, use the local authority's exact certificate-holder and additional-insured instructions, and make sure the business name matches the state registration.

Why Indianapolis Licenses Don't Transfer

Indiana has no statewide contractor license and no inter-jurisdictional reciprocity for general contractors. Each building department — Marion County, Hamilton County, Allen County, and every other — operates independently. A license in one jurisdiction grants no privileges in another.

For contractors in the Indianapolis metro area, this means checking each jurisdiction separately if you work across county lines. A remodeling contractor who takes jobs in both Indianapolis and Carmel needs to satisfy both Marion County BNS requirements and the applicable Carmel or Hamilton County requirements independently.

Hamilton County remains a separate jurisdiction to check, so confirm the current requirements before your first permit application.
