How to Search for an Idaho Plumbing License

The Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses (DOPL) maintains a public license search portal where anyone can verify whether a plumber holds an active credential. This matters whether you're a homeowner vetting a contractor, a general contractor checking a subcontractor's status, or a plumber confirming your own license is current.

The search is available through DOPL's electronic licensing system, OASIS, at edopl.idaho.gov. You don't need an account to run a public search.

What a DOPL License Search Shows

When you look up a plumbing professional, the public search returns several key pieces of information:

• License type: Apprentice, Journeyman, Plumbing Contractor, or one of the specialty categories (Specialty Apprentice, Specialty Journeyman, Specialty Contractor)
• License status: Active, expired, or inactive
• Expiration date: When the current license period ends
• License number: The unique identifier tied to the individual

For plumbing contractors specifically, the search also shows whether the contractor has a qualifying plumber on file — this is the individual whose journeyman credentials qualify the business entity to operate.

Why Verification Matters

Idaho law requires that anyone performing compensated plumbing work hold an active state credential. An apprentice must work under a registered contractor with direct journeyman supervision. A journeyman can perform independent work but cannot pull permits or hire employees. Only a licensed plumbing contractor can pull permits, bid on projects, and offer plumbing services to the public.

If a contractor's license has lapsed, any permits they pull and any work they perform are technically unauthorized. For homeowners, this means potential code enforcement issues down the line if the work fails inspection or if a dispute arises.

Common Reasons a License Doesn't Appear

If your search returns no results, a few things could be happening:

Spelling mismatch. The OASIS system matches on the exact name registered with DOPL. Try searching by license number if you have it, or use partial name searches.

Expired or inactive status. Idaho is currently transitioning from triennial (3-year) to biennial (2-year) renewal cycles. Individual licenses transition based on the licensee's birth year — even-year births renew in even-numbered years, odd-year births in odd-numbered years. Business and contractor registrations transition based on their original issue date. A plumber who hasn't completed the transition may show as expired even if they intend to renew.

Wrong license category. Idaho does not issue a "master plumber" license. The Plumbing Contractor credential is the functional equivalent. If you're looking for a "master plumber," search under the contractor category instead.

Out-of-state license only. A journeyman licensed in Washington, Oregon, or Montana may be eligible for Idaho reciprocity but hasn't yet applied. An out-of-state license doesn't appear in the Idaho DOPL system until the holder completes the reciprocity process.

Verifying Your Own License Status

If you're a licensed plumber checking your own status, log into your DOPL customer account at edopl.idaho.gov. Your dashboard shows your current license type, expiration date, renewal status, and any outstanding requirements. This is also where you'll manage renewals when your cycle comes due.
