Delaware Plumber License Exam: Schedule, Locations, and What to Expect

How the Delaware Master Plumber Exam Works

The Delaware master plumber licensing exam is administered by ProV, the state's contracted testing vendor. You cannot schedule it until the Board of Plumbing Examiners has reviewed your DELPROS application and granted exam authorization — there is no way to walk in or self-register without Board approval.

Once authorized, you typically schedule your exam within one to two weeks through ProV's online scheduler.

Test Format and Timing

The exam is a computer-based, 100-question multiple-choice test with a three-hour time limit. It covers plumbing systems design, plan interpretation, calculations, and regulatory standards specific to Delaware.

The passing score is 70%. ProV provides an immediate diagnostic score report on screen when you finish, and official scores are sent to the Board within about two weeks.

Where to Take the Exam

ProV operates physical testing centers in three Delaware locations: Wilmington, Newark, and Dover. Sessions run two to five days per week with start times at 8:30 AM, 9:00 AM, 12:00 PM, or 1:00 PM depending on the center and day.

If you prefer to test from home, ProV also offers remote online proctoring through their Examroom platform. You need a computer with a webcam, microphone, and reliable high-speed internet. Before the test starts, an online proctor conducts a physical scan of your testing environment to verify there are no unauthorized materials in the room.

What Reference Books Are Allowed

The Delaware plumber exam is open-book. You may bring permanently bound editions of the International Plumbing Code to the test center. Loose-leaf pages, photocopies, or tabbed study guides from commercial prep companies are not permitted — the code book must be an unmodified, bound publication.

If you are testing remotely through Examroom, the same rule applies. You can reference a physical code book during the proctored session, and the proctor will ask to see it during the environment scan.

Exam Fees

Each attempt costs $100, paid directly to ProV when you schedule. This fee is separate from the $173 state application fee you already paid to DPR. If you fail and retake, you pay another $100 per attempt.

ADA Accommodations

Candidates who need testing accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act must submit their request and supporting documentation directly to ProV during the registration process. The Board does not handle accommodation requests — this goes through the testing vendor.

What Happens After You Pass

Your passing score report goes to the Board, and your individual master plumber license is typically issued within 14 days through the DELPROS portal. You do not need to take any additional action beyond waiting for the Board to process the result.

If you are applying through the bypass path (seven years of experience, no apprenticeship), remember that you must have already passed the separate Apprenticeship Bypass Exam at a VoTech school before you were eligible to sit for this exam. The master exam is the second of two tests for bypass candidates.
