Late Renewal and Reinstatement Are Different Things
Missing the September 30 renewal deadline doesn't automatically lapse your license. There's a period after the deadline where a late renewal — with a $50 surcharge on top of the renewal fee — is still possible. But once the Board of Industrial Trades considers your license fully lapsed, the late renewal option closes and reinstatement becomes the only path back.
The difference matters because reinstatement can involve more than just paying a fee. The board may require you to re-verify your experience or retake the trade exam before restoring your credential.
Reinstatement Fees

These fees restore your license to active status. They're the same as the biennial renewal fees — there's no additional penalty surcharge on top of the reinstatement itself.
The Clean Hands Requirement Still Applies
Before the board will process a reinstatement, you must clear the Clean Hands check. If your license lapsed because you left DC or stepped away from the trade, unpaid obligations may have accumulated — franchise tax returns you didn't file, a parking ticket you forgot about, or a corporate biennial report fee you missed.
Check MyTax.DC.gov and resolve any outstanding balances before submitting the reinstatement application. The system blocks the application automatically if you owe more than $100 to the District.

When Re-Examination Is Required
The Board determines whether re-examination is required. Do not assume that a short or extended lapse automatically produces a particular result; confirm the requirement with the Board before filing.
If re-examination is required, you'll go through the standard PSI scheduling process — $52 exam fee, board pre-approval, and the same passing score requirement (70%). If the applicable examination is subject to the Board's six-month waiting period, that waiting period applies if you fail.
Contractor License Reinstatement Has Extra Steps
If your trade contractor license lapsed along with your mechanic license, reinstating the business requires both:
- Reinstate the individual master mechanic license ($155)
- Reinstate the contractor license ($180)
You'll also need to confirm your surety bonds are still active. If the bonds expired during the lapse, new bonds must be filed using the official DLCP Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Bond Form before the contractor license can be restored.
Your BBL may also need renewal or reinstatement if the underlying trade credentials were inactive. Check your BBL status on the BOSS portal and confirm any required action with DLCP before operating.
